Veronica Cartwright, Tom Skerritt and Richard Dean Anderson head up the stars at Oz Comic-Con Melbourne…tickets on sale now!
The countdown to Melbourne’s biggest and best pop culture event has started: On July 5 and 6 Oz Comic-Con will make its way back to the garden city and tickets to the epic celebration of all things geeky-cool have just gone on sale. Having recently wrapped two hugely successful events in Perth (March 29-30) and Adelaide (April 5-6) and a sold-out Sydney Q&A with British superstar Benedict Cumberbatch (April 12-13), anticipation could not be higher for the upcoming Melbourne leg on the expo.

In 2013, the Melbourne public showed their appetite for Oz Comic-Con events, with a massive crowd of geeks, nerds, comic book lovers, cosplayers, fans and families turning up for the pop culture party. It’s all about the heroines, hunks and handymen in 2014. Headlining the event is Hollywood sci-fi royalty Veronica Cartwright (Alien, The Witches of Eastwick), Tom Skerritt (Alien, Picket Fences, Top Gun); and Richard Dean Anderson, known for bringing to life the gadget building and wielding title character on the iconic TV series Macgyver and the wisecracking Jack O’Neil on the long-running sci-fi show Stargate SG-1.

Other celebrity guests announced so far include TV heartthrob Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie) and talented twins Shawn and Aaron Ashmore. Shawn is well-known for his part in the TV series The Following and for playing mutant superhero Iceman in the X-Men series of films, including upcoming blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past, while Aaron is most recognised for roles in cult-hit TV shows such as Warehouse 13, Smallville and Veronica Mars.

Also on board for the Melbourne event is Jim Cummings, the man who gives voice to the legendary animated characters Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, heroes of many a childhood memory. Plus a huge line-up of comic book artists who have illustrated even more (super)heroes on the pages of such comic books as DC’s Earth 2 and Birds of Prey (Nicola Scott), IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters (Tristan Jones) and Marvel’s X-Factor and Thunderbolts, along with DC’s Injustice: Gods Among Us (David Yardin).

To be held at the Royal Exhibition Building on July 5 and 6, Oz Comic-Con Melbourne will not only give fans the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of their favourite stars, it will also feature two days of celebrity panels, autograph and professional photograph opportunities, special screenings, industry master classes, portfolio reviews and a huge range of vendors selling exclusive merchandise.

Oz Comic-Con Melbourne tickets are on sale now through Showclix and via the Oz Comic-Con website. Tickets purchased in advance through those portals will have a discounted price from those available at the door. Families are encouraged to attend with their little super heroes and to make it more affordable, Oz Comic-Con offers one free child’s ticket for each adult ticket purchased! As with the Perth and Adelaide events, anyone who pre-purchases tickets to Oz Comic-Con Melbourne will go into the draw to win a trip for two to New York Comic Con. With thanks to ReedPOP, the prize includes return flights for two to New York City, two VIP passes for the four days of the convention (October 9-12 2014) and six nights’ accommodation.

2014 also marks the first time that exclusive Oz Comic-Con merchandise is on sale. The merchandise, which includes hoodies, caps, t-shirts, and tote bags, is available as an option when pre-purchasing tickets, and can be collected at the show.

REEDPOP PARTNERS WITH OZ COMIC-CON
The Makers of New York Comic Con to Help Grow Australia's Leading Pop Culture Events

SYDNEY, February 9, 2014 – ReedPOP and Oz Comic-Con, the world’s largest producer of pop culture events and Australia’s best series of pop culture expos, are proud to announce a working partnership that will see them combine their extensive resources to expand the pop culture experience for Australian fans and herald in an exciting new era for Oz Comic-Con.

ReedPOP is known for putting on some of the biggest events in the world including New York Comic Con, Star Wars Celebration, C2E2 and Penny Arcade Expo (PAX Prime, PAX East and PAX Australia). Produced by local company DCA Enterprises, Oz Comic-Con is a thriving franchise of expos that celebrate the realms of comics, film, TV, anime, manga, gaming and toys. Both companies share a passion for Australia’s creative landscape, its pop culture industry and its audience.

“Teaming ReedPOP, the world’s leading producer of pop culture events, with Oz Comic-Con, Australia's top series of pop culture shows, was a natural fit,” said Lance Fensterman, ReedPOP’s Global Vice President. “We are thrilled to work with the entire team at Oz Comic-Con and together build fan experiences that are bigger, better and more amazing than either of us could do alone.”

At the heart of the partnership is a commitment to celebrating, growing and nurturing Australia’s creative talent and related industries.

“We are delighted by what this will mean for Australian fans, artists and businesses - those who are at the heart of what Oz Comic-Con is all about,” said Rand Ratinac, Director of DCA Enterprises. “Oz Comic-Con has always drawn attention to the value of local artists and exhibitors, while also offering fans the chance to meet international celebrities. We remain committed to this support of Australia’s creative and trade industries and, by merging the experience and resources of DCA Enterprises and ReedPOP, we will be opening the door to considerable local and international opportunities and recognition for them.”

“Oz Comic-Con has a sense of family and community that Aussie fans have embraced with open arms, many of them leaving with unforgettable memories of once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” Fensterman continued. “We can’t wait to be part of the fun, love and unity prevalent at Oz Comic-Con and look to our global nature as a means to further bolster support for the local industries it celebrates.”

With the advantage of ReedPOP’s worldwide positioning and Oz Comic-Con’s strong relationships within the pop culture sphere, it’s an endeavour that will shine a light on what Australia has to offer at an international level.

“Over the past two years, Oz Comic-Con has presented first-class pop culture experiences to the Australian audience, acting as a stage for local and international creativity,” Ratinac added. “Our partnership with ReedPOP elevates Oz Comic-Con within the competitive international market, truly putting Australia on the map for pop culture events and opening the door for remarkable opportunities that will carry on through to our attendees, supporters, guests and exhibitors.”

“We look forward to blending ReedPOP’s experience with DCA’s local knowledge, to build fan experiences all over Australia on a scale never seen before,” Fensterman concluded.

Since its inception two years ago, Oz Comic-Con has held events in Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, drawing around 90,000 fans in 2013 alone. Oz Comic-Con’s celebrity guests to date have included William Shatner, Stan Lee, Sir Patrick Stewart, Shannen Doherty, Richard Dean Anderson and many more. In 2014, Oz Comic-Con will continue to grow, adding shows in the major Australian cities of Brisbane and Sydney to its roster.

No stranger to the Australian market, ReedPOP's first foray into the country was last year’s inaugural PAX Australia, a video game festival that saw 35,000 gamers descend on Melbourne, a reception that was beyond all expectations. While on the other side of the world, New York Comic Con has been running since 2006, draws over 100,000 fans and features some of the biggest celebrities, exclusives and announcements on the planet.

ReedPOP's relationship with Oz Comic-Con will begin at Oz Comic-Con's upcoming Perth (March 29-30) and Adelaide (April 5-6) shows, where representatives from ReedPOP's New York Comic Con team will be on hand to experience the expos from the perspective of attendees, guests and exhibitors alike and increase their understanding of what drives the Australian audience. Acting as the face of ReedPOP in Perth will be Fensterman; while on the ground in Adelaide will be Peter Tatara, the company’s International Director of Content and Marketing.

Based on feedback from Fensterman and Tatara, ReedPOP will then work in collaboration with DCA Enterprises on future events, to add to the exceptional quality that fans have come to expect from both New York Comic Con and Oz Comic-Con.

Press Release - July 2012
Oz Comic-Con Melbourne
It's been a little over a week since the first Oz Comic-Con Melbourne, and we've had a chance to sit down and look over the whole event; what went right and what didn't. The one thing that's been on everyone's minds, of course, is room. This year we had the biggest venue that we could secure, and it still wasn't enough for the sheer number of fans who came through over the weekend; in the final analysis, just over 35,000 people came through and there were many more who unfortunately weren't able to get in, as both the venue management and Oz Comic-Con organisation were not prepared to go beyond the safety limits of the venue. So that's the first thing we've looked at for next year; a larger venue with more space for the fans. Our new venue is already confirmed, and details are available on the website. However, in a number of ways the event was also very successful, and we also have the fans of Melbourne to thank for that; just about every retailer had bumper sales, and if you've been following the special guests on Facebook or Twitter, you'll have seen what a fantastic time they had coming down here to meet you all.

In the end, we just have to thank Melbourne for turning out for the show. Some lessons have definitely been learned that will help us make next year's show even bigger and better, and you can be sure that the guest and activity line-up will be one that'll make you eager to return (look forward to guest announcements starting soon, for Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne!).

Press Release – July 2012
Oz Comic-Con Melbourne
Once again, the organisers of Oz Comic-Con Melbourne would like to thank everyone who came along to the event over the weekend. If we thought that Adelaide Oz Comic-Con was huge – Melbourne has totally blown us away.

As stated at the end of Saturday, we were completely in awe of the sheer number of people who turned up, with nearly 40,000 attendees coming through the event over the weekend. Contrary to the rumour mill, the event was not oversold, with less than half the attendees on pre-purchased tickets. What we didn’t count on was the sheer volume of fans who turned up all at once, hoping to buy tickets at the door. This is something we will learn from – and again, we thank the fans for the patience that was shown at the time and apologise for any disappointment for those who were unable to purchase a ticket. As we’re sure everyone understands, safety is the number one priority, and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre managed both door ticket sales and entry into the event to ensure the well being and safety of all attendees. That is why the doors had to be closed at certain points over the weekend, as we won’t compromise on the safety of our attendees, guests and volunteers, now or in the future.

We acknowledge that whilst there were many great things over the weekend, there are also areas which need to be changed and next year’s Oz Comic-Con in Melbourne on the 6th and 7th of July 2013 when we move to our new massive venue the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton, will be all the bigger and better for everything we’ve taken from this event.

We’d also like to thank all the visiting talent, especially the legendary Mr Stan Lee (who signed an incredible 1,000 autographs in just four hours on Saturday after arriving from the USA that morning) and the very gracious Sir Patrick Stewart. All our special guests worked so hard to make this event an incredible experience for the fans – so again, thank you.

Finally, we also want to thank our volunteers, who worked tirelessly over the weekend. Their commitment to Oz Comic-Con has been just amazing, and we thank them for everything they have done for the event.

We’re looking forward to the next Oz Comic-Con events in Perth, Adelaide and again, Melbourne, in 2013. Stay tuned to www.ozcomiccon.com for updates on visiting talent and events.

Press Release – July 2012
Oz Comic-Con Melbourne Day One
We’d like to thank everyone who came along to Oz Comic-Con Melbourne today. It was a huge day for everyone – and certainly exceeded our expectations.

As this was our first major con in Melbourne, we were in awe by the response from the fans, and we thank everyone for their patience and feedback; which will be inculcated into future events.

We underestimated the eagerness that everyone had to get there first thing Saturday morning. Of course, this created delays for attendees trying to enter the event at some times - while we were forced to close the doors on several occasions, we did everything within our power to try to accommodate as many attendees as possible, while keeping everyone's safety and welfare in mind.

Tomorrow is set to be a huge day too – so please, keep an eye on Twitter #OCCMel, and our Facebook page, for regular updates. Plan ahead, be prepared, keep in mind there will be queues...but above all, have fun!

Thank you for your support of Oz ComicCon Melbourne.

A note for Platinums, VIPs, Excelsior!, the Games Experience ticket holders, and people who pre-purchased Stan Lee photo tokens for Sunday: to collect your photo and/or autograph tokens tomorrow, please make sure you come to the Platinum, VIP & Specialty Tickets end of the token booth; don't join the general token line for those.

Press Release – May 2012
WE CAME, WE SAW... WE OZ COMIC-CONQUERED.

It was with great aplomb that the first ever Adelaide Oz Comic-Con launched at the end of March (Saturday 31st, and Sunday April 1) at The Goyder Pavilion, Adelaide Showgrounds (www.ozcomiccon.com). Oz Comic-Con, bought to Adelaide by Sydney based company DCA Enterprises saw a massive 18k attendees through the door across the weekend (10k Saturday, 8.5k Sunday). Without a doubt this is an incredible feat for Oz Comic-Con's debut and the event organisers, exhibitors, volunteers, special guests and everyone who came along should all be very proud for helping to make it such an incredible inaugural event.

Nerds, geeks and pop culture enthusiasts from all walks of life converged on the Show Grounds – with lines out the door even before the official 9am opening time. A range of celebrity guests attended the weekend festivities; with key guests including Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy), Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Norman Reedus (The Boondock Saints), Jewel Staite (Firefly, Serenity) and Disney Legend Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy and Pluto, among others) all on the line-up.

The excitement extended beyond celebrity guests with Oz Comic-Con’s very own marriage proposal taking place on stage during the Day 1 Cosplay Competition. Here, a lycra-clad Superman (Patrick McBride) stood bended knee for his Supergirl (Jessica Locke) in front of a packed auditorium. Needless to say, Supergirl said yes and romance was once again proven alive and well!

There were over 50 exhibitors who took part in Oz Comic-Con over the weekend and retailer expectations were blown out of the water.

Sellers of rare merchandise, collectibles, games and clothing were astounded with the success of the event - with a number of exhibitors reporting that they had doubled, (and some even tripled!) their expected takings. The roaring trade on Day 1 meant that a number of local retailers returned home on Saturday evening to restock for Sunday.

When asked about the turn out - one half of DCA Enterprises, Event Director Rand Ratinac said, “…this was our first Oz Comic-Con and we are absolutely blown away by the incredible level of support and warm welcome we received from the Adelaide community. With Melbourne just around the corner, things are only going to get bigger and better!”.

For those who missed out don’t fret, Melbourne Oz Comic-Con will be here quicker than Disney’s Goofy can say "gawrsh!”. The Melbourne leg takes place on June 30th and July 1st 2012 and will play host to a new dose of international and local talent. So far leading the stellar lineup is Sir Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek) and Stan Lee (The Amazing Spiderman); as well as key cast members from The Hunger Games and Oz Comic-Con's newest addition, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Stargate: Atlantis).

For full event details and line up can be found at www.ozcomiccon.com Tickets are now available through Ticketmaster, and will be available for purchase on the door both days.

Oz Comic Con-fusion

Oz Comic-Con would like to make a statement in light of the recent article posted on popular gaming website Kotaku and the comments that have been left online as a result of the article.

Firstly, we would like to reiterate again that Oz Comic-Con is in no way associated or affiliated with San Diego Comic-Con or any other Comic-Con out of the many that are hosted throughout the world. In naming our event Oz Comic-Con we sought to reflect both the spirit of, and the incredible calibre of Comic-Con events around the world. The Oz Comic-Con name is a way for us to instantly convey to fans the type of event we aspire to put on in 2012 and in years to come.

As a new event coming to Adelaide, we were pleased to be receive support from The Hon Gail Gago, South Australian Minister for Tourism, in announcing the event. Minister Gago’s office has been incredibly supportive of Oz Comic-Con as a fresh and exciting addition to South Australia’s thriving tourism industry. The article stated the "Adelaide tourism board" (sic) worked independently on the announcement after receiving our press release, and "didn’t even contact us directly". This is a quote which has been taken out of context. The local tourism board wasn’t involved - our PR team liaised directly with Minister Gago’s office, and from there her team worked closely with the relevant journalist at The Sunday Mail.

Above all, as the organisers of Oz Comic-Con, we would like to thank Minister Gago and her team for recognising and endorsing an event that ultimately, will bring tourists and tourism revenue to the state of South Australia.

The press release that was issued at no time stated that we are affiliated with any other Comic-Con around the world. Once a press release is issued however, we have limited control as to how it is portrayed in the media and what information may be added or detracted from publication.

It saddens us to see the event treated in such a disrespectful manner and to upset the popculture fandom, our intention has and always will be to put on a fantastic event that will make pop culture and entertainment fans around Australia proud.

Regardless of any negativity that has arisen from this, we are certain that Oz Comic-Con will be an amazing success, regardless of individuals or groups who choose not to support us. We hope that moving forward, people will be smart enough to get behind what will no doubt be an incredible addition to expo’s and conventions in Australia.

We are happy to address any enquiries regarding this or any other matters via the contact us section of the website. Please see ozomiccon.com for further details.

Australian Comic-Con kicks off in Adelaide

Oz Comic-Con: Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1st April 2012,
Goyder Pavilion, Adelaide Showgrounds
The ultimate pop culture and fan expo!

Adelaide has been chosen to host the Down Under debut of Oz Comic-Con (thehubproductions.com) in 2012.

In the spirit of Comic-Con events throughout the world, globally recognised as entertainment industry powerhouses, Oz Comic-Con will be a pop culture expo like no other. Adelaide fans will be the first to experience the event in Australia, before it moves to Melbourne in June 2012, expanding further into Australia throughout 2013 and 2014.

Over two days, Oz Comic-Con Adelaide will feature international and local film and TV stars such as Jewel Staite (Firefly, Serenity, Stargate Atlantis), Teryl Rothery (Stargate SG1), Aussie Nicola Scott (Teen Titans, Birds of Prey, JSA, Secret Six), Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation) Stewart McKenny (Super Friends, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures) with many more to be announced.

In an Australian first, aspiring SA comic creators will be able to submit their work for professional review, with Scott Allie (Dark Horse Comics, Senior Managing Editor) in attendance at Oz Comic-Con Melbourne and scouting for new talent.

There will also be comic book and anime artists, gaming demonstrations and cosplay competitions (a unique type of performance art in which participants don costumes to reflect cultural ideas and concepts, often from Japanese popular fiction).

"Oz Comic-Con will be more than just a gathering place for South Australian fans of the various arms of pop culture," said Ms Carissa Avenhouse, of Oz Comic-Con organisers DCA Enterprises. "It will celebrate and educate – it will be the place for fans to share their love of pop culture, get up close and personal with celebrities, enter contests with fantastic prizes, or learn how to break into the industry."

Oz Comic-Con is brought to Adelaide by DCA Enterprises (thehubproductions.com), a Sydney-based company who specialise in popular culture events, bringing some of the world’s most loved stars to Australian shores.
